Tajikistan is a country in Central Asia that borders Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Afghanistan. Until 1991 it was part of the Soviet Union.

The official language is Tajik, a variant of Persian, which is also the official language of Iran and Afghanistan. Tajik has been written in the Cyrillic alphabet since 1940 (before 1928 it was in the Arabic alphabet and from 1928 to 1940 the Latin alphabet). Persian belongs to the Indo-European language family. Russian is used in administration and business.
