Traditional Chinese clothing is usually referred to as hanfu. The clothes someone wore depended on his or her status in society. Each social class had a different sense of fashion. In the early People's Republic, Mao Zedong inspired fashion with his own variation of the Zhongshan suit. That became known in the West as the Mao suit. The cheongsam became the standard dress for women.
