Probably the most famous Swiss book is Heidi, the story of an orphaned girl who lives in the Alps with her grandfather. It is one of the most popular children's books in the world and has become a symbol of Switzerland, partly due to its keen view of Swiss society. The author, Johanna Spyri (1827-1901), wrote a number of other books on similar themes.
