The Plain of Jars (in Laotian: Tong Hai Hin) is a plain in Laos about 10 km from the city of Xhieng Khuang. Hundreds of gigantic pitchers are spread over different locations on the plateau. The largest pitcher is more than 3 meters high and weighs 6000 kilos. Besides these large pitchers there are also many smaller pitchers. Nobody knows what the pitchers were used for.
According to a local legend, the pitchers were crafted in the 6th century by the Lao king Khun Chong to celebrate the conquest of nearby Xhieng Khuang. The pitchers are said to have been used to ferment rice wine to hand out to the celebrating victors.
