Slowakije

Slovakia or Slovakia is a republic in Central Europe, which broke away from Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993, which therefore ceased to exist. The country is bordered by the Czech Republic to the northwest, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south and Austria to the west.

Slovakia consists for the most part of mountain areas, all of which are part of the Beskids and the Carpathians. The mountain areas can be roughly divided into two groups; those north of the valley of the rivers Váh and Hornad, and the area south thereof. In many mountain areas there are many popular winter sports areas, especially in the High Tatras. In the latter mountain range is also the highest mountain in Slovakia; the Gerlachovský štít (2,655 m) and the Kriváň, which has an important symbolic significance for Slovakia.
