Portugal

Portugal is a country in southwestern Europe. Together with the only neighboring country Spain, which borders Portugal to the north and east, it forms the microstate of Andorra, some mountain valleys in the Pyrenees belonging to France and the British exclave of Gibraltar, the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal borders the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. Portugal also includes the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira.

The Portuguese art of pastry has its origins in the Middle Ages. Catholic monasteries, which are widespread all over the country, managed to make a spectacularly wide variety of different pastries using very few ingredients (usually almonds, flour, eggs and various spirits), of which pastéis de Belém (or pastéis de nata), originally from Lisbon, and ovos molos from Aveiro are the best known.
