Nicaragua was visited in 1502 by Christopher Columbus and was conquered by the Spaniards in 1522. After being a part of Mexico for a short time, it became independent as part of the United States of Central America in 1823. This federation broke up in 1838 and Nicaragua became an independent republic. The nineteenth century was marked by a struggle between conservatives and liberals, while American adventurer William Walker also served as president for a while. The situation stabilized when the liberal José Santos Zelaya became president in 1893. It was overthrown by Mexico and the United States in 1909, and the country was occupied by the United States. In 1933 the Americans left the country again.
