The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is an independent, English-speaking country in the Caribbean. Its name is derived from the Spanish Baja Mar (shallow sea). The Bahamas consists of an archipelago of 700 islands and 2000 cays (or keys = sand / coral plates).

Only 30 to 40 of all islands are inhabited. The largest island is Andros, about 180 kilometers southeast of Florida. The Bimini Islands are northwest of it. To the north is Grand Bahama with the second largest city: Freeport. Great Abaco is east of it. The second largest island of Great Inagua is located to the south. Other islands are Eleuthera, Cat, San Salvador, Acklins, Crooked Island and Mayaguana.
