South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia is the southernmost of the three national parks in the valley of the Luangwa River. The park is home to large populations of Thornicroft's giraffe, elephant and African buffalo. Groups of crocodiles and hippos live around the river. It is one of the most famous national parks in Africa suitable for walking safaris. The park was established in 1938 to protect nature. In 1972 the area was declared a national park and is now 9,050 km².
