Because the islands are so remote, many endemic plants and animals have arisen here. The most famous endemic tree is the coco de mer, a coconut palm species. This tree has the largest coconut in the world and can be found on only one island of the Seychelles, which is Praslin. It grows in the rainforest in the middle of the island, in the Vallee de Mai. The nuts of this living fossil resemble double ordinary coconuts. They can reach a length of about 40 centimeters and a weight of 15-25 kilograms and contain only a single seed.
