Sao Tomé en Principe

Sao Tome and Principe is a country off the west coast of Africa, in the Gulf of Guinea. Sao Tome and Principe consists of several islands, of which Sao Tome is by far the largest. Then comes the much smaller Principe and a few uninhabited or barely inhabited islands.

The national dish of Sao Tome and Principe is calulu, a stew with fish or chicken, palm oil and various vegetables; the national drink is palm wine. Tropical root crops, breadfruit and plantains, along with corn and bread made from imported wheat, are the staple foods of Santomese cuisine. In addition, many fruits such as banana, avocado, papaya and guava are eaten. The main source of protein is fish and to a lesser extent chicken and shrimp. In the past, bats and monkeys were also eaten and today eating snails is still in use.
