Korean cuisine, aimed at the humble, is based on rice, vegetables, fish, seaweed and tofu (dubu in Korean). Typical Korean meals are known for the large number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany rice, soup and kimchi (fermented vegetables). Korean food gets its flavor from combinations of sesame oil, soy paste, soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger and the main ingredient, chili peppers, which give the special spicy taste.
