The Maldives consists of 1,190 coral islands, grouped into 26 atolls. These are (with the exception of parts raised by man) on average 1.5 meters above sea level. The highest point of the country is 2.4 m and is located on the island of Villingili. This makes it the lowest-lying country in the world, with the lowest average elevation and the lowest highest point.
