The Maldives or Maldives are an archipelago consisting of 1,190 coral islands, grouped into 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean southwest of India. The islands are spread over an area of approximately 90,000 km², but the total land area is only just under 300 km².

The Maldives consists of 1,190 coral islands, grouped into 26 atolls. These are (with the exception of parts raised by man) on average 1.5 meters above sea level. The highest point of the country is 2.4 m and is located on the island of Villingili. This makes it the lowest-lying country in the world, with the lowest average elevation and the lowest highest point.
