Kiribati's national flag was designed in 1932 by Sir Arthur Grimble for the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. The top half is red and contains a yellow frigate bird flying above a yellow rising sun. The bottom half is blue and contains three horizontal wavy white stripes. These symbolize the ocean and the three groups of islands (Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands). The seventeen rays of the sun represent the sixteen Gilbert Islands and Banaba.
