Indië Remembrance 2023

15-08-2023

On 15 August, we mark the end of World War II for the Kingdom of the Netherlands and commemorate all victims of the war against Japan and the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies. The war experiences and the large-scale displacement that followed continue to work to this day for now 2 million Dutch people with an East Indies war story in their family and also in our society as a whole.

This year, the Rotterdam Region 15 August 1945 Commemoration Foundation will not only commemorate the end of WWll in the former Dutch East Indies, but for the first time in Rotterdam it will also celebrate Indian culture with performances and, of course, food! We notice that there is increasing attention for 15 August. It was therefore decided to move the location of the commemoration 30 metres from the main pole of the Flag Parade to the Boompjeskade while maintaining the view of the Erasmus Bridge. The new location offers more space and tranquillity.
