Flag Parade lets Kings & Queens fly

16-03-2023

The Rotterdam Flag Parade Foundation and Kings Day Host City Rotterdam 2023 present the extensive Kings & Queens flag project in honor of Kings Day from April 19 to 27.

Especially for King’s Day, on April 27, 2023, the 750-meter-long Flag Parade will exchange all 193 country flags that normally fly at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge for flags bearing photo portraits of Rotterdam citizens.

The one-off project is a unique homage to the diverse and raw character of Rotterdam, and puts a spotlight on the Kings & Queens that dot the city.

From the team of Heilige Boontjes to Cammy the Salsa Queen; 193 well-known and less well-known Rotterdammers, who roll up their sleeves every day in all parts of the city, will be honored with a true state portrait (with a wink). The photos, taken by photographer Joyce de Vries in collaboration with students from InHolland University of Applied Sciences, are not only on display at the Flag Parade, but also part of the overall city dressing in the city.

“The route taken by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima on April 27 passes by the Flag Parade on the Boompjes. With this project we give the royal couple the most inspiring view they have ever had!” said Iris Kerst, board member of the Flag Parade.

About the Flag Parade
At the Flag Parade on the Boompjes in Rotterdam, next to the Erasmus Bridge, all 193 flags of the United Nations fly daily. The Flag Parade is a warm welcome to the more than 174 nationalities living and working in Rotterdam. The city therefore welcomes all world citizens with the Flag Parade and is proud of its international character. The Kings &,Queens project is in line with this mission.

About Rotterdam – King’s Day and 10 years of Kingship
Together with the city, a festive program has been developed that suits both Rotterdam and the Netherlands. On Kings Day 2023, and also in the run-up to it, Rotterdam will show what the host city stands for. Rotterdam is a colorful, international port city, built by people from all corners of the world. The celebration of Kings Day and 10 years of Kingship will be a beautiful Rotterdam celebration in which everyone can participate and where there is something for everyone. The theme “We are all Kings & Queens” is the common thread throughout the route and the program. From the decoration of the city to the activities on the route for the Royal party and the 10-day city program. In collaboration with various partners, Rotterdam is celebrating a united celebration for all Dutch people.
