Guatemala

Guatemala is a country in Central America, bordering Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Guatemala has an extremely varied landscape. In the center and northwest of the country there is a plateau with mountain and volcano peaks above 4000 meters. The name Guatemala comes from the Kaqchikel, and means: Land of many trees.

The official language of the country is Spanish, but a significant part of the population speaks Mayan languages, of which K'iche ', Kaqchikel, Q'eqchi and Mam are the most important. In some other parts Garifuna or Xinca is spoken. In some, mostly remote, parts of Guatemala, the Mayan people are not bilingual.
